Electronic identity (eID) services

The Information System Authority is responsible for the development and maintenance of software enabling authentication, digital signing and encryption, as well as the online authentication and digital signing system. It also establishes, maintains and updates the trust services infrastructure.

Electronic identity (eID) – a collection of data that connects the person with his/her physical identity in an electronic environment. In Estonia, each person has one physical identity and the same applies to electronic identity.

Authentication services

The State Authentication Service allows institutions to offer different authentication methods in their e-services, including ID card, Mobile-ID, Smart-ID, and European Union eID, by combining these authentication methods or using them separately. The State SSO service allows institutions to add support for both national and European Union cross-border authentication methods with session management to their e-service.

The Digital Signature Gateway Service allows you to create signed envelopes. Digital Signature Validation Service SiVa allows you to validate documents digitally signed in legacy or lesser known formats.

The Encryption Service enables data to be encrypted using an ID card, making it unreadable to unauthorised parties, and decrypted so that it can be read by the intended recipient.

DigiDoc applications and Web eID

The ID software allows opening digitally signed documents, checking the validity of signatures, providing digital signatures, and encrypting information. In addition, it allows the use of Estonian digital documents (ID-card etc.) online for secure authentication and signing.

Information System Authority (RIA) develops the vision and strategy for the field of eID and is the advocate for and the developer of positions in the field of eID in Estonia. RIA is responsible for the software components of eID aimed at developers and providers of e-services and provides support to developers.

The id.ee website is the central knowledge portal for Estonia's eID. It enables end users to download eID software, access installation and user guides, and find general information about electronic identity. The website also provides developers and system integrators with the information they need to install, use and integrate eID software.

Digital wallet, or the European Union Digital Identity application (EUDI Wallet)

The European Union Digital Identity Wallet (hereinafter referred to as the EUDI Wallet) is a pan-European secure mobile solution that enables people to identify themselves digitally, sign documents, and store and present various electronic attestation of attributes. Every Member State creates a digital wallet application based on its own e-ID solution, which is recognised throughout Europe.
