TransferWise named Estonia's best e-service


TransferWise, a provider of international payment and currency exchange services, was named the overall winner of the "Estonia's Best e-Service 2013" contest today during the conference on information society.

According to Katri Ristal, Chairwoman of the jury of the Estonia's Best e-Service 2013 contest, TransferWise won both in the category of e-commerce and in the overall category. "TransferWise, a start-up created by Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann allows making international currency transactions without having to a pay a substantial service or conversion fee to banks every single time," said Ristal and added that the service has a large worldwide market.

TransferWise received the award in Tallinn from Peter A. Bruck, Head of the World Summit Award, who also invited the winner to the international contest.

The TipTheAuthors online environment won the e-Entertainment category of the "Estonia's Best e-Service 2013" contest. The environment allows for legally downloading Estonian and foreign films and music. The category of e-culture was won by the web game Ennemuistne, the electronic border queue system won the e-governance category and the joint funding platform for creative projects Hooandja won the e-involvement category.

According to Katri Ristal, a total of 77 entries were submitted and the level of this year's winners was very high; however, in some categories such as the e-education and e-health categories, prizes were not awarded.

The objective of the "Estonia's Best e-Service" contest is to introduce innovative e-services and e-solutions as well as their customers and creators in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Services and solutions could be submitted to participate in the contest by the service providers themselves or the software development enterprises engaged in developing the services.
