The new ID-card application DigiDoc4 will reach all users

Within a week, users will be able to automatically update their software to the new ID-card application DigiDoc4 Client, where it is possible to carry out all activities related to the ID-card: give digital signatures, encrypt documents, and change PINs.

To install the new application, you must agree to the update provided by your computer. If you do not get the notification for the update within a week, you can download it from the website ». Mac OS X users will find the application DigiDoc4 Client from the App Store.

To ensure a smooth transition, the current DigiDoc3 application will remain on the computers. However, the main version of the software will be DigiDoc4. This means that digitally signed documents will automatically be opened in the new application. DigiDoc4 will also open if you right-click on the document and choose digital signing. To use the old application, you must run DigiDoc3 and open documents in this application.

According to Tõnis Reimo, Product Manager at the eID Department of the Information System Authority, people should switch to the new ID-card application by the end of the year. ‘We will no longer update DigiDoc3. Instead, we will focus on upgrading DigiDoc4. From 1 January 2019, documents cannot be signed with DigiDoc3 and to avoid confusion, the application will be removed from computers with the next update of the ID-card application,’ explained Reimo.

DigiDoc4 has a new user interface design and usage logic. The application has a more modern design and is easier to use. Until now, there were three separate applications for the main functions – the ID-card management tool, DigiDoc3 Client for signing, and DigiDoc Crypto for encrypting – now, all these operations can be executed in one user interface. A detailed list of the updates is available on the website ».

‘We encourage all users to provide their suggestions and feedback to make the ID-card application even better. For example, we have already received feedback that DigiDoc4 must be made more user-friendly for the visually impaired with the next updates,’ said Reimo.
