Head of eesti.ee advises the UK government

Starting in July, the head of the Estonian State Portal eesti.ee, Mihkel Tikk, is advising the UK government on IT solutions. The Estonian State Portal is a department of the Estonian Information System's Authority.

The UK Cabinet minister Francis Maude invited Mihkel Tikk to the UK following his visit to Estonia in April of this year.

Mihkel Tikk is participating in a working group of the Cabinet Office whose aim is to analyse and review the existing ICT strategy and goverment e-services in the UK.

“The British are planning fundamental IT reforms that are in essence similar to what we have done in Estonia. The experience and working level contacts established in London are undoubtedly also beneficial for Estonia,” Tikk said.

“Technology is but one aspect of e-solutions. A service will not become more user friendly if we simply move it from paper to an electronic environment. The logic and structure of the bureaucracy also need to be changed. In short, the British are interested in how we have succeeded in bringing the cost-effective e-state close to the user in Estonia and how to avoid paper-based thinking,” he added.

EISA is open to engaging with Estonian partners to develop long-term cooperation between Estonia and the UK in the fields of e-society and ICT in the European Union.
